Different types of slots are cut for different purposes. There are a few ways to cut a slot in wood without a router. The method you choose depends on the type of slot you’d like to make, as well as on the tools you happen to have on hand. Keyhole slots are used typically for hanging finished work on the wall. These one of a kind piggy banks are my original design. They are cut from solid slabs of native hardwoods. The coin slot accepts quarters and smaller coins. It’s snout is held securely in place with a neodymium magnet, which easily pulls off to make withdrawals. This gives an all new meaning to ‘paying through the nose’.

This craft project is suitable for anyone with basic woodworking skills and tools — it can be built using only a table saw and a table-mounted router, although an electric sander is also recommended.
